Funny Christmas Story

Poetrygift.com

Here is a personal story about our family. I hope you enjoy it and maybe get a laugh out of it.

My husband has a history of falling off of roofs. I can't say he is clumsy, but I can say he has nine lives. He has fallen more than once. Terry was the owner of an architectural sheet metal company. By owner, I mean lead worker and foreman. Terry's company was located in the heart of Chicago and landed jobs on some architectural gems, including Frank Lloyd Wright buildings. The work was not easy and, at times, was dangerous.

One day in December, while inspecting a building, Terry slipped and fell three stories to the ground. He was ok, except for a shattered heel and broken ankle. He was destined to spend Christmas in the hospital.

Terry and I had 2 young children, 4 and 1, at the time. Needless to say, it was a scary time for them. On Christmas eve, as we spent the evening at my sister's house, Terry surprised us all. Did he show up? No, he couldn't get out of bed. What he did do is send a clown, complete with balloons and make up, to surprise the children and family. While this clown surprised (and somewhat scared) the heck out of the kids, it was a testament to the way Terry felt about his family. Even though he couldn't be there in person, he put his stamp on the holiday with a clown.

When I think about that evening and look at pictures, I can't help but think, "That clown was over the top" but the kids loved him and that was all that was important. Terry made his presence known and the surprise was the best part. That Christmas was both blissful and memorable. I can ask my children to this day what their first memory was and it never fails that they remember the clown. Poor kids!
